At once intensely experimental and deeply traditional, Brahms’s fourth and final symphony draws on a lifetime of experience and immersive study. The finale, an astonishing interpretation of the ancient passacaglia form—incorporates Bach’s death-drunk Cantata No. 150, “For Thee, O Lord, I Long.”
